Genvest analysis

Standalone net profit was ₹1,045 crore, almost three times the ₹352 crore of a year earlier, when provisions were ₹1,452 crore; this quarter they were ₹1,137 crore. Profit was 2.8% lower than the June quarter's ₹1,075 crore, when trading gains were ₹181 crore against ₹11 crore now. Core operating profit, which leaves out trading gains, rose 38.5% from a year earlier to ₹2,527 crore, as operating expenses grew 16% against 21.9% growth in income excluding trading gains.

Net interest income rose 21.0% from a year earlier and 3.5% from June to ₹6,184 crore. The net interest margin fell to 5.58% from 5.96% in June, against 5.59% a year earlier; the bank puts the June figure at 5.90% without interest on an income tax refund. It raised ₹34,390 crore of FCNR(B) deposits, the foreign-currency term deposits of non-resident Indians, and lent ₹24,885 crore against them, which enlarged the balance sheet. Of the 32 bps fall from that 5.90%, it attributes 16 bps to those loans and the rest to surplus liquidity, the day count and the asset mix.

Deposits rose 25.9% from a year earlier and 11.8% in the quarter to ₹3,48,583 crore. CASA deposits grew 19.8%, more slowly than term deposits, so the period-end CASA ratio fell to 47.6% from 50.8% in June; excluding FCNR(B) deposits it was 52.8%. Loan assets, including credit substitutes, rose 30.1% to ₹3,46,913 crore, or 20.8% excluding the FCNR(B)-backed loans. S&P Global Ratings gave the bank its first international rating, BBB-, which is investment grade.

Gross NPAs fell to 1.32% from 1.51% in June and 1.86% a year earlier, and net NPAs to 0.40% from 0.44%. Credit cost was 1.38% of average loans and 1.01% of average total assets, against 1.53% and 1.13% in June; it includes ₹100 crore of standard-asset provisions on the FCNR(B)-backed loans, and the bank still holds a ₹515 crore contingency provision. Provision coverage was 70.1%, and capital adequacy 14.67%, against 15.05% in June.

What IDFC First Bank's results mean for fund investors

  • Banking funds. Banks are the largest holdings of banking and financial services funds, and each bank moves these funds in proportion to its weight in them. The largest banks carry far more weight than mid-sized ones.
  • Index funds. Financial services is the largest sector in the Nifty 50, so results from the biggest banks also reach Nifty 50 index funds.
  • One quarter is one data point. Loan growth, margins and bad loans move over several quarters; one results day says little about a fund on its own.
  • Overlap. If you hold several banking funds, or bank shares alongside them, check how concentrated you are with the portfolio analyzer.
