What the score is
A fund’s place in its category, from 0 to 100
A score of 71 means the fund ranked above about 71% of the other funds Genvest scores in its category. Every category has a fund at 100 and one at 0, whatever the category as a whole has done.
What it measures
Five measures, each judged against the same category
- Consistency against its benchmarkHow often and how steadily the fund has stayed ahead of its benchmark index, rather than in one lucky stretch. This carries the most weight.
- Holding up in fallsHow deep its falls from a high have been, and how long they lasted.Shown on each fund page
- How bad the bad days wereThe shape of its returns: how its gains compare with its losses, and how severe its worst days were.Shown on each fund page
- Recent momentumIts returns over the last 3 to 12 months, and how steady its behaviour against the market has been.
- OutlookA statistical estimate, from resampling its past returns, of how likely it is to beat its benchmark over the next 12 months.
The fund pages on this site show the score, the fund’s rank and the two measures marked above. The rest of the analysis, including the outlook, is in the Genvest app.
How the score is set
Measure, compare within the category, combine, rank
- MeasureEach measure is worked out from the fund’s daily direct plan NAVs and its category’s benchmark index.
- CompareEach result is set against the other funds in the same category, so a small cap fund is judged only against small cap funds.
- CombineThe five are weighted into one figure, with the most weight on consistency against the benchmark.
- RankFunds are ranked on that figure, and the rank becomes the 0–100 score. A fund needs at least a year of NAV history to be scored.
What it does not tell you
A rank from past data, not advice
- It is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any fund.
- It is built from past data; ranks change as markets and funds change.
- It does not look at the fund’s holdings, manager or size; cost counts only through returns, which are after expenses.
- It does not know your goals, how long you can stay invested or what else you hold.

That the fund ranked above about 71% of the other funds Genvest scores in its category. The score is a rank, not a grade: in every category, one fund scores 100 and one scores 0, however good or bad the category as a whole has been.
The score ranks the funds Genvest’s research covers in each category, with at least a year of NAV history. The category guides list every open-ended fund AMFI reports. The two lists are built separately, so their counts can differ.
No. It uses the fund’s daily NAVs and its benchmark index. It does not look at the fund’s holdings, its manager or its size. Costs count only in that NAV returns are after expenses; the fund pages show cost and size separately.
Each fund page shows the date of the data its score was calculated on. Scores and ranks change as new NAVs come in.
