Net profit fell 24.3% from a year earlier to ₹1,189 crore, though it was 34.6% higher than in June. The press release uses consolidated figures, which add the company's engineering and insurance-broking subsidiaries: revenue of ₹20,696 crore, which the company says is its first quarter above ₹20,000 crore since its inception, and net profit of ₹1,196 crore, down 23.9%.
Hyundai sold 2,19,072 vehicles, its highest in any quarter, 14.7% more than a year earlier and 23% more than in June. Domestic sales rose 18.8% to 1,65,772. Exports, which include vehicles shipped as kits, rose 3.7% to 53,300; the company says they grew 38% from June despite geopolitical challenges. CNG models made up 19.1% of domestic sales and rural markets 26.6%, both company records. By our calculation from the presentation, hatchback sales rose 41.3% to 31,956 and SUV sales 12.6% to 1,11,756, so SUVs' share of domestic sales fell to 67% from 71%.
The consolidated EBITDA margin was 9.5%, down from 13.9% a year earlier and up from 9.3% in June; on the standalone figures it was also about 9.5%, against 14.0% a year earlier, by our calculation from the filing. The company blames higher commodity costs: materials took 73.8% of consolidated revenue, against 70.1% a year earlier and 72.6% in June. In its bridge of profit before tax, raw materials took away ₹861 crore from a year earlier, while volumes and pricing, net of discounts, added ₹401 crore. It credits operating leverage, a healthy mix and cost cuts for the improvement from June. Its average selling price rose 2% to about ₹8.07 lakh per car, domestic discounts fell 8.2% to about ₹23,000 per car, and localisation rose to 84% from 82%.
Hyundai's Pune plant passed 1 lakh vehicles produced within eight months of starting operations, according to the presentation. The company says the launch of the Bayon, which it calls an intelligent utility vehicle, marks the start of its "golden product cycle", and that it plans to launch a dedicated mass-market electric vehicle in Q4 FY27. Capital work in progress on the standalone balance sheet rose to ₹2,647 crore on 30 September from ₹710 crore at the end of March, and the company paid ₹2,306 crore for property, plant and equipment and intangible assets in the half year. It also says its passenger-vehicle exports from India have reached 40 lakh in total, the most of any company on a cumulative basis.
The company has made no provision for its obligations under the End-of-Life Vehicles Rules, 2025, which require it to obtain extended producer responsibility (EPR) certificates to cover the scrapping of vehicles it sold in India from April 2005 onwards. It says the pricing mechanism for these certificates has not been notified, so the cost cannot yet be estimated reliably. The quarter's results show no exceptional items.
What Hyundai Motor India's results mean for fund investors
- Auto and transportation funds. Carmakers, two-wheeler makers and auto-parts companies make up most of these funds, so results days move them more than diversified equity funds.
- Index funds. The Nifty Auto index is made up of vehicle and auto-parts makers, and the largest of them are also in the Nifty 50, so index funds tracking either hold the company in proportion to its weight.
